Scuffing is a localized damage process caused by sudden failure of the lu- bricating film in sliding contact. It associated with an important increase temperature, friction and vibration. For piston-ring cylinder-liner (PRCL) contact, it can lead to complete engine failure. shown this paper, that temperature gradient generated contact induces thermal Marangoni effect. The latter might then lack lubricant initiate scuffing. On contrary, ring displacement along liner redistributes oil on surface. This redistribution helps avoid starvation hence reducing scuffing initiation risk.
